If you’re considering moving to Chicago, you’re in good company. Every year thousands relocate from New York, Los Angeles, Houston, and other major metros. Why? Chicago offers big city energy without the sky-high cost of living along with the unique advantage of having luxury high-rise living in most neighborhoods.
Cost of Living
Compared to New York and LA, Chicago offers noticeably more square footage for your money. A luxury 1-bedroom in River North or Gold Coast might start around $2,700 per month, which is considerably less than the same in SoHo or West Hollywood. Even compared to Houston, many renters find downtown Chicago’s lifestyle and architecture worth the tradeoff.
Where to Live
If you’re coming from NYC, you may love the Gold Coast or River North. Both areas are densely populated, energetic, walkable, and full of dining, nightlife, and entertainment options. These near north side neighborhoods also blend modern buildings and retail with historic architecture and tree lined streets with elegant brownstones.
Moving from LA? Consider the West Loop. The loft style buildings, amazing food, and trendy yet slightly more laid back vibe make it a favorite amongst people moving from the west coast.
If you’re moving from Houston you might appreciate South Loop’s newer high-rises and community feel—similar to Houston’s evolving Midtown scene. You can get slightly more bang for your buck in the South Loop as opposed to other downtown neighborhoods and square footage in the newer units tends to be slightly larger.
Adjusting to the Seasons
Let’s be real, winter is a factor, but newer buildings like NEMA or Optima Signature offer indoor everything: pools, lounges, co-working, golf simulators, and fitness. (Optima even offers direct walkway access to Whole Foods without needing to go outside). We’ve even written about apartments for “all weather living”.
